Hi TrentWiki, thank you for choosing ShoutWiki to make your wiki.
We would suggest that you start your wiki off by doing these few basic things:
*Upload a logo. You can do this by uploading an image over :File:Wiki.png. (not available on some skins)
*Design your Main Page. The main page is likely the first thing users will see. It should be attractive and catch the eye.
*Start building content. All wikis need content to become the best they can be.
If you need help with making a logo, skin or favicon, please see ShoutWiki's Logo Creation Wiki.
If you need any help with building your wiki, feel free to contact ShoutWiki staff either via their talk pages or via Special:Contact. Alternatively, you can talk to us, or other users, via IRC.
Thank you again for using ShoutWiki.

Currently £145.50 for a colour TV annually, Britain's TV License Fee is a fee towards the government to help pay for Public Service Television, such as the BBC. Curiously, a £49 fee still exists for black and white only televisions. There are discounts available under various circumstances; for example, people 75 and older do not have to pay a TV licence at all.

The BBC is a publicly owned British media company. Founded on the 18th of october, 1922, the BBC has been in operation for 93 years. Since it is wholly a public service entity, the BBC displays no advertisements for it's UK viewers. Since the BBC cannot make additional money from sponsors or advertisements at home, it does so abroad. The BBC also exports some of it's television shows, such as Sherlock, for a fee, gathering them extra revenue. This, in addition to the BBC World Service segment, makes the BBC a Global Company.

In terms of television, advertisements, also known as ads, are corporately sponsored messages that are often played in the interlude between 15 minute segments of TV shows. In the Film Industry, advertisements are often played before a film starts in order to gather more revenue for cinemas. Other sponsorship deals include product placement, wherein products are shown prominently in films or television shows for the purpose of exposing the brand name to more potential customers.

Sponsorship, a form of advertisement, is a method of generating revenue for a product wherein a company will pay for their advertisement to play directly before and after a television show. Often accompanied by the phrase, "[TV SHOW] is brought to you by [PRODUCT/COMPANY]", sponsored advertisements serve to associate a product with a show.

Commercial television is a model of television company which operates towards commercial goals, primarily profit. Sky is an example of a commercial television company. In stark contrast to Public Service Television, commercial television channels often show advertisements, sometimes in the for of sponsorship deals prior to, and directly following programming. Some commercial television channels, for example Sky Sports, operate both on an advertisement and subscription basis. Private Capital is also used to fun commercial channels, meaning that other companies may directly or indirectly contribute to programming.

The Television Industry is one of the two main segments of the media industry. Media or television companies purchase or rent channel space, also known as airwaves, in order to broadcast programming of their choice. There are two main subsections of television channels: Public Service Television and Commercial Television, wherein the former serves the public and tends not to deliver advertisement, whilst the latter tends to rely on corporate sponsors, advertisers, subscribers and/or pay-per-view models.

Commercial television, as opposed to Public Service Television is televsion made by companies not operating in the public interest - that is to say, television primarily created to produce a profit. Commercial television companies are also often Global Comapanies such as Sky, but not always - ITV, an independant television company, operates solely within the British isles.

Independent television, much like independent film, is television in more niche genres that are target towards smaller, less mainstream audiences. ITV, or Independednt TeleVision, is one such example of a television channel that was intended, at least originally, to broadcast independent television. Nowadays, ITV broadcasts mostly mainstream television directed towards larger audiences, whilst Channel 4 has gained more of a reputation as a somewhat daring (yet decidedly mainstream) independent television company.

Private Capital is money funnelled into capitalist ventures that is not tied to the government or shareholders. A private company has more freedom with what they can do and their goals: they often can set more long term goals since they are not bound to pleasing shareholders with dividends. This also means that they can, for example, show advertisements, which publicly owned companies cannot.

Pay-Per-View is a commercial television model which requires that viewers, much like the name suggests, pay for each viewing of a broadcast. Pay-Per-View models are often utilised by the professional sports industry in order to maximise profits for fights which garner unusual public attention, such as last years' Mayweather Vs. Pacquiao boxing match. This used Pay-Per-View as many people would not purchase a subscription solely for this event, but would be willing to pay money to see it. Often, particularly in America, bars and other establishments offer 'Pay-Per-View Nights' in which people can gather at the bar and all watch one broadcast of a fight or event, which allows the bar to sell drinks to people attracted by the event. The Pay-Per-View model is in contrast to models which rely on advertising, or subscription

Vertical Integration is where a company absorbs another company that is in a different part of the same segment, e.g. if a car company bought a car dealership. An example of vertical integration in the media industry would be where the Chinese company Wanda Firm purchased Legendary Pictures, an American film company. This is the first time a major US film corporation has been purchased by a Chinese firm. Vertical integration is in direct contrast to Horizontal Integration.

Horizontal Integration is where one company purchases another within it's operating segment, Eg a car company purchasing another car company. An example in the media industry would be when Disney Studios purchased Lucasarts, another film studio. If a company purchases all of the corporations operating within a given market segment, it is called a monopoly.

A monopoly is a company which owns all of the companies in a given market segment. An example of an attempted merger into a monopoly is where the american cable corporation Comcast attempted to merge with Time Warner Cable. This would have resulted in a monopoly, where Comcast/TW would control the vast majority of the market share for ISPs, which would force consumers into purchasing intent connections from them. The FCC decided that they could not, in fact, merge, as it reduces competition and makes it unfair for consumers. Big monopolies are broken up by anti-trust laws, which are in place to prevent monopolies from existing and reducing consumer choice. In the past, the massive railroad monopolies have been broken up by antitrust laws. Some refer to the Big Six media corporations as an oligopoly, whereby said six control all (or virtually all, as the case may be) of a given market.
